Noadays Tropea is a widely known name. Every name has its own origin, which often reveals an ancient reality. Much has been said and discussed in the past about the place-name. Its foundation had been connected to the celebration of a victorius leader's trophies. Someone has spoken of Scipione back from the Battle of Zama, or of Pompeo already the winner of naval battles in the surrounding waters of the Sicilian Coast, or of Ottaviano who, victorious over Pompeo in the naval battles, found refuge in the natural landing of Forum Erculis. Here he migtht have decided to celebrate his trophies and founded, in memory of them, a city, since he could not celebrate in Rome his victories over the Roman milithiae.
